UK web users spend the equivalent of one working day every fortnight wilfing – what was I looking for? – on the internet, according to new research.
The study commissioned by Moneysupermarket.com and carried out by YouGov, shows that Britain's 34 million internet users spend a third of their time online idly browsing websites that they did not initially intend to visit.
Experts have suggested that the amount of choice available to browsers was the main cause of distraction and those aged 55 or older were found to be three times less likely to while away the hours online than those under 25.
Jason Lloyd, head of broadband at Moneysupermarket.com, said: "Our study shows that although people log on with a purpose, they are now being offered so much choice and online distraction that many forget what they are there for, and spend hours aimlessly wilfing instead.
"It's important that people do not allow distractions to get in the way when surfing the internet, as it can affect productivity in the workplace and relationships at home."
The survey demonstrates that if a website is well optimised with a high density of quality links, large volumes of traffic can be drawn in and converted into hard revenues.

I've added 3 Podcasts to my Blogline: Travel with Rick Steves: Japan Visitor Blog -Tokyo Osaka Nagoya Kyoto: Free Audio London Walks. They all involve travel. I have had some trouble playing the podcasts on TPL computers. Sometime they work and sometimes they give an error message.

Assignment #6: Online Office Tools

Online Office tools is a great way to collaborate with others on a shared assignment. It enables you to access a document anywhere there is a computer and Internet available without carrying it around with you on a disc. However, I haven't had enough time to really explore all its possibilities.

These RSS feeds are fun but take up a lot of time. There are certainly lots of journals, news sources, etc. that have excellent work applications, like Library journals and Book Reviews, but not sure I have the time to really spend reading them on a regular basis. Something to look forward to when I retire!
